On Sunday, July 12th, 2009, on EWTN, Fr. Scott Haynes celebrated the Sunday Mass. We heard a wonderful homily in the past from him and were looking forward to another. He did not disappoint.
He is a priest of The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, who are devoted to helping Catholics rediscover a profound sense of the Sacred through solemn liturgies, devotions, sacred art and music, as well as instruction in the heritage of the Church, the catechetics and Catholic culture.
Father Haynes is also a great homilist and teacher. Everything he says flows into the next thought, and builds the sacredness of our Faith brilliantly. I might add that he is a convert.
Soooo....I went to the website of the church where he is an assistant pastor and found that they have a Padre Pio Prayer Group. They are quite spiritual about it.
They speak of the Holy Father's (JPII) three gifts to the Shrine of Padre Pio: One of them was that the memorial of St. Pio be inserted into the Roman Liturgical Calendar as 'obligatory.' This passage of their website was written at least a year after Padre Pio's Canonization, and it states that very few parishes followed the direction "last September." I thought it a good idea to follow through on their suggestion to check with our parishes for next September.
HERE IS HOW IT WAS WRITTEN ON THEIR WEBSITE:
"The 50 pilgrims from the Padre Pio Prayer Group/Chicago, who attended the canonization ceremony on June 16, 2001, learned of the second privilege at that time. It is the exceptional decision by the Pope that the memorial of St. Pio of Pietrelcina be inserted into the Roman liturgical calendar as obligatory. Only two saints canonized in the last 100 years share this glorious distinction: Ss. Padre Pio and Maximillian Kolbe. On September 23rd of every year--the date of the saint's death and heavenly birth--Padre Pio will be invoked at all Masses offered on that day throughut the world, and in the reading of the Divine Office.
"Although the Holy Father gave this particular gift to the Church at the June 2002 canonization, very few parishes followed this direction last September. All devotees of St. Pio should remind their parish priests of this and also make a special point of attending a Holy Mass on Tuesday, September 23rd this year. We build devotion in others by our example, and direction and devotion to Our Lord yields miraculous fruit."
